fasionable but perhaps not functional?

Are there ever spaces that you love the look of but are also baffled by? That is how I feel about eat-in kitchens (the most extreme versions of them). I just adore them when I see them in magazines but I just don't understand how anyone could actually cook in them let alone entertain. Am I alone in this feeling? Or am I just missing an eat in kitchen trick?

I'm in love with the idea. It just says family to me... Big family dinners. I'd love a kitchen with a long farm table in it. I'm sure I'd have it to spend some time clearing it before each meal and it would make sweeping around all the chairs tougher. I still think I'd love it though! And you found some beautiful ones... I especiall like the first and third kitchens.

we have to eat very close to our kitchen (it's all the same room) but the table is separated from the cooking space by a bar. i guess i'm used to it b/c i've lived in small spaces for so long. i'm not sure it's smart to have white benches beside the stove top (obviously no one is doing any cooking!)

I LOVE my eat-in kitchen but i get your point.

Some of them definitely look doable, but a few of them look way too tight. Like the one with the white fabric slip covers... REALLY? One pop when you're cooking spaghetti, and bam. red spots everywhere. :)

I think if that second kitchen had a breakfast bar separating the kitchen from the dining area, it would just about be perfect.
Happy weekend Blair!
i love the idea of eat in kitchen, especially for a small home (but big kitchen), it's just like open plan living with the dining room & kitchen almost as one room!

I think I would bump into things :) They're really cute though!

One thing about eat-in kitchens is that the table often gets co-opted as another work surface--my kitchen table is always swimming under cooking tools, books and papers, you name it! which usually means we're too lazy to clean it off and eat at it, and just end up eating in front of the TV!

I think eat in kitchens are workable as long as there's enough square footage... These spaces certainly are beautiful, but you are right that they may not be functional!

Happy weekend, B!

I'm in love with photo # 4 style of eat-in-kitchen. I love those portraits on the walls, big spaces and the mix of styles!
Have a wonderful weekend, darling!

i was a bit startled when i came upon the last photo. maybe it had something to do with seeing a white upholstered chair in the kitchen and a large table smack in front of the oven. i'm not sure.
The second to last one is my favorite - very rustic. The last one is a little bizarre - yet still pretty. Glorious finds! :)

If I was to have an eat in kitchen it would be alot messier than these! But I love looking at the pictures, they are so lovely.

Haha in Manhattan there aren't really other options ... although I guess we don't technically do eat-in kitchens here, more like eat-in living rooms? Oh the sadness of it all ...
I like the idea of eat-in kitchens- but off to the side. More of a breakfast nook. I don't know what I think about the table being where you would normally put an island!

I love the idea too, but I can't really imagine entertaining in one (well, that is if you were actually cooking too!) They seem more friendly to a simple family dinner to me. And each of these spaces is lovely!

Love the wing back chairs at the table. I can't imagine what the arms would look like in my house, though. Probably sticky! If I had slipcovered chairs in my kitchen, they'd have to be made out of oilcloth.

love your blog! I have an eat in kitchen more out of necessity than desire, because out apartment is too small for a dedicated dining room. Granted, you just can't use white fabric anywhere near it. The thing I love about it, is my guests can be sitting at the table and chat with me, while I finish up meal prep. I think you have to have a pretty informal lifestyle(and dinner guests) to make it work.
All of these decoration are looks gorgeous . thanks you very much .. Cut Out Image
