preparing for spring..

Although spring is not quite here (technically starts two weeks from today) I think I am going to force it to come early--quite literally. I sadly haven't planted any bulbs in my yard and to me spring is just not the same without them. So, this weekend I will be attempting to "force" some bulbs--thinking about hyacinth, as they have the loveliest aroma and possibly tulips. That way when spring does come I will have some fresh cut flowers to tote around in the basket of my bike...

What is your favorite spring flower? Or have you ever forced bulbs?

My favorites are Peonies by far. I can't wait to see them this year. In college there was a Peony garden right near my house.

I can't wait to shed the winter coat!

Tulips are by far my favorite. I was just thinking about trying to force some here, too...but I kill everything I touch in the garden, so perhaps I'll just think about flowers instead.

Hyacinths! But I've never grown them, let alone forced a bulb.

I love so many different flowers I don't think I can pick a favorite. I have never forced bulbs, in fact I don't remember planting anything. Not much of a gardener. Love your photos!

Tulips are definitely my favorite. I love them!! And no I have never forced bulbs. I am not a gardener by any means...I actually don't even know if I know what that mean!?!

My all time faves are: zinnias, peonies and Queen Anne's Lace (even if it is a weedy blacksheep from the carrot family!) Mona

I am so amazed with your green thumb. I just bought some potted tulips for my counter [I needed a pop of colour]. The soil is still frozen so I think a garden is not in the cards.

I love peonies and dhalias, however tulips and daffodils scream "SPRING" to me.

Beautiful photos in this post!

Yes, I have forced bulbs. I did a whole bunch of them a few years back and it was a lot of work actually so I haven't done it again, but it is a fun project if you haven't done it before. I did tulips, hyacinth, and grape hyacinth. They do take quite a while to come up-several weeks in the refrigerator for the cool, dark environment they need, and then several more weeks in the sunlight. It's a good project to start in January. :)

My favorite spring flowers, hands down, are peonies!
