quandary {dress form decor}

I am usually pretty black and white when in comes to my taste in home accessories but dress forms are just one of those things I just can't quite decide on. I think they add such personality and function when used in a certain way but worry that the shadow they cast in the middle of the night may give goosebumps.

So, I am curious--what do you think?

I love my Judy, she came from a Paris flea market...at first my husband thought she was a very expensive nic nac...now he thinks we are so cool to have her...when we moved he wrapped her up himself and took her in the car.
She has been in our bedroom, my office, the dining room and now in the livingroom...you never know where she will turn up next...lol

Hmm, I feel you on the creepiness factor at night. Perhaps a mini one to sit on a dresser would be a nice option?

yeah, I totally agree :) but I guess they could be in a studio or something, where you can't see them when you wake up :))

I think they'd be scary, unless like the others said, you have them in a studio.

I like dress forms. I have a friend who has a ladie's room with all of her wonderful treasures and in her corner stands two. Even though I like them I'm not sure they would fit in our home. You cracked me up with your nightly shadow. LOL... Enjoy! xoxo

i am dying to get a vintage dress form....love the way they look.
but...i do have one that i take the pictures of my jewelry on and i have to move it around to get the right light....it has certainly freaked my children out at different times when it shows up in unexpected places :)

I'm definitely partial to dress forms used as decor items, have been since I used to look at them in Ballard Design as a kid. I think they look especially nice when used to display jewelry or scarves!
I bought a dress form, Betty, to use at shows and for photographing my jewelry. At least that was my excuse. But I do simply love the way she looks. I leave her dressed and on display all the time in my studio. And she's not nearly as vintage chic as the ones you show here. That said, I have walked into the room more than a few times (at any time of the day) and found myself startled at her presence! We're used to her now, though. :)

I don't love them in the living room or the entryway, but in an office or studio I fully support them. I really want one for my studio and to help with sewing projects.

I have debated this so many times. I haven't decided yet but I love them in those pictures. I would say go for it!

dress forms are such a great way to add some girliness to a room. I love the ones you've chosen :-) For myself, I think I want one for my closet to throw on all my belts, necklaces, etc--thanks for the inspiration!!

i love all of these photos. and i love dress forms.
oh no! I must admit I'm a totally coward. I couldn't stand being next to a dress form in the middle of the night!

I just love them! They are so chic and add a certain softness and whimsy to a room. I am always on the hunt for them while antiquing... although they can be a bit hard to find (especially at a decent price and in good shape). I think they would kinda scare me too! You just have to memorize in your sleepy haze that they are there!

I agree about the creepy at night thing, but if looked like the one in the first picture I think it would totally be worth being scared once in a while!

Oh B I love all of these! I have been trolling ebay for the perfect dress form for ages! (Shipping is so $$$!). I adore the antique-y ones. Fun post!

I'm totally with you! Sometimes I think they're so beautiful and at other times, I think no way!
if i ever make my own dresses those would be great, then again i'm a little afraid of the dark :)
I have one I named Lola that I piled high with my turquoise and coral jewelry designs. Alas...she remained in The States, or I'd probably be using her somehow in the casa...unless of course, she spooked my toddler! ;)
I'm a negative on this one! But am glad other people like them! :)

I love those little small ones. I have a friend who keeps her necklaces on hers and it looks so nice on her vanity. I would be afraid that if I saw one of those large dressforms in the dark (in the middle of the night) it might scare me to death! ha

Thank you all so much for your input! Glad I am not alone on them potentially being a little scary:)

I think I'm slightly more freaked out about the HUGE pair of scissors on the wall. . . that could be sinister!

But I know what you mean about the dress forms... the word 'mannequins' even freaks my boyfriend out! But then he does know a horrible story about them. . . :O

Love them as decor during the day though, very boutique chic.

I see the allure of them and my mother-in-law has a thing for them They look great in her house. I don't think I'll have any in my home though as I'm afraid of just what you mentioned... The midnight/peripheral vision/shadow freak outs that are sure to happen to me.

I love them, and I am always on the look out for a vintage dress form, but I'd never considered the scary shadows at night-- and I can be a huge scaredy cat! Hmmm... I will now give some serious thought to where I would place one!

Hmmm. I might be a bit bias, but I love having Charlotte, my infamous dress form in the studio. But would I have her in my apartment? Not so sure. Maybe if I had a huge walk in closet and wanted to drench her in necklaces. That could be cute.

I love my early 20th century (and delightfully decrepit) dress form, Vera... she was a wedding gift 10 years ago and I'll keep her forever. I have fun accessorizing her!
This is something I think is cute in magazines, but would scare my husband, cat, and friends. Kinda creepy when in real life. I totally get it, but I am the only one who would.
